eBay A splendid museum-quality specimen of sylvite crystals with halite crystals. Sylvite is potassium chloride, and it is a member of the halides class. Sylvite, also called sylvine, is a significant source of potassium or potash used in fertilizer products. So great is the need for potassium that sylvite deposits are considered very valuable economically. As a mineral specimen, sylvite does not get much attention. The crystals can be well-formed and are often reddish due to hematite inclusions. However, sylvite is very soluble in water, and specimens need to be stored in closed containers because even the moisture in the air can degrade its appearance. Never clean a sylvite specimen with water! The sylvite crystals are octahedral, white to colorless, and most are translucent, yet several are semi-transparent. The sylvite is associated with orange-yellow, vitreous cubic halite. The halite does fluoresce a bright pink-red under shortwave (254nm) ultraviolet light, whereas the sylvite does not fluoresce. This is a high-quality, museum-grade specimen from a classic locality. Dimensions are 15.5×11.0x10.3cm – 6¼x4½x4in. Please note the centimeter cube and inch bar for scale. Most of the minerals from the Franklin and Sterling Hill zinc mining district fluoresce under shortwave ultraviolet light. The shortwave wavelength is 254nm or otherwise known as UV C. Always read the description carefully to determine if the main mineral of interest for a particular specimen will fluoresce. ALL fluorescent minerals depicted in our storefront are illuminated by two (2) 9 watt Triple short/mid/longwave AC Model 9SM-110 Way Too Cool LLC ultraviolet lamps, and the shortwave tubes and filters were replaced in late 2018.
