{Description}French Seed Trade Beads White Handmade Would be excellent to make your own waist beads with these seed beads! African waist beads were popularized by women from the Yoruba tribe in the 15th century. They are made by women- for women- to celebrate, for rites of passage, and for status. The colors each have a special meaning and symbolize different spiritual aspects. They are worn around waists and hips and mainly represent femininity, fertility, sensuality, and spirituality. In more recent years they have gained popularity in the West and have taken on different meanings with the root of the original intentions kept in mind. Women wear them today for weight awareness and for the beauty and aesthetic of them, as well as a spiritual outlet to connect to their ancestors. The term ”Trade Beads” typically applies to beads made predominately in Venice and Bohemia and other European countries from the late 1400s through to the early 1900s and traded in Africa and the Americas. The heyday of this ”trade” period was from the mid 1800s through the early 1900s when millions of these beads were produced and traded in Africa.
