1988 romantic comedy La Lectrice also known as The Reader starring Miou-Miou, Régis Royer, Christian Ruché, Maria Casares and directed by Michel Deville. The Story: Constance (Miou-Miou) reads Raymond Jean’s novel La Lectrice aloud in bed to her lover. Inspired by the story of Marie, a character in the novel who advertises her services as a reader of literature, Constance decides to do the same. As the film progresses the lives of Constance and Marie become merged, making it hard to distinguish what is real and what is fantasy. This structure is further complicated when the lives of her clients become entangled with characters in the stories she reads. The film is interspersed with readings from well known literary sources as diverse as Baudelaire, Duras, Tolstoy, Lewis Carroll and de Sade’s 120 days Comment: Clever, stylish romantic comedy from award winning French director Michel Deville (Death in a French Garden, Almost Peaceful, Le voyage en douce, The Woman in Blue). Deville transmits to us the joy and comfort the main character brings to her clients by reading to them. Constance, thanks to her voice, her passion of reading and her glowing presence makes people happy and eventually makes the spectators happy as well. In many ways, La Lectrice is like Patrice Leconte’s The Hairdresser’s Wife – one of those rare films where you smile during all of the film. It was also the vehicle for Miou-Miou to perform in one of her very best roles… an absolute gem of a film, done up in French style! New, factory sealed disc, case and label imported from Australia on recordable media. Per the label, the film running time is 95 minutes. The film is presented in widescreen format, with the original French audio only and optional English subtitles. The opening and ending credits are in French. This DVD disc is NTSC format and designed to play on DVD players in North America. It may not play on Playstations or similar game devices.
