Here’s something you don’t see every day and are guaranteed not to see on your next ride! This things rocks! And rolls! Over anything! Literally, it rolls over steps and stairs like they aren’t there! It is truly a one of a kind trail rig. It truly floats. This is a custom made Waltworks 36er. What, you ask is a 36er? Imagine the story Goldilocks, because that’s what happened. Back in the day, mountain bikes had 26″ wheels, but the world though they were inefficient. Strong, but inefficient. So then they went to 29″ and the world was like, ”wow, that’s too big – we need something everyone can ride!” So along came the 27.5″. Remember how 29″ was too big for the masses? This is 36″ so it’s even bigger than that! But here’s the thing… it was custom built for a rider 5’9″ to 5’10” or taller – just add a taller seat post! I wear a 30″ inseam on my Levi’s and my boys are comfortable. Fork is Walt’s custom segmented fork, like Fat City or Igleheart does. Tons of braze-ons, so it’s the ultimate adventure bike. This is the ”smallest” frame size 36er that an inseam of 30ish can ride. If you have a longer inseam, you should have plenty of room for the boys. Nothing funky going on with the geometry, either – I’m normally proportioned, although pretty large – so it’s beefy. It was finished in late 2015 and has been used in some ”Bike to Work” and ”Ozone Action Days” promos. It’s like new. Grab your tape measure! Standover, not at the TT/ST junction, but just in front of the saddle is appx 31.5″ From the tip of the Brooks to that center of the bars with that stubby Thomson is 18″ I’ve included the original drawing by Walt. I do not know if any specs were changed in production, though, other than the bolt cages. All parts were new and the frame was professionally Frame Savered and prepped: faced/tapped/etc. and then built by the local pro shop. Color is RAL 6021, or ”National Forest Green.” Components are new SRAM X9 with the exception of SLX hubs and Avid BB7’s. Cockpit and seatpost are Thomson. Wheels were custom built by Walt’s builder, Steve Lawlor, in Colorado and powdered to match. Typical custom touches: water bottle mounts on the fork legs and three on the frame (there’s one under the down tube.) A color matched and powdered rear chromoly Surly ”Nice” rack. Those are US quarters on the fork legs: one is Arkansas and the other Connecticut. They are covered in powder coat and Walt suggested cutting them out with a sharp X-acto. The bike, prep and build cost over $4500 + shipping and the wait. With supply chain issues what they are, I’m not sure you could find the parts to build one today. Even though they might be pictured, the pedals and cages are not included, nor is the Brooks. It’s molded to my derriere. I can include a substitute saddle if you prefer. Odds are, if you’re looking at this, you already have your own molded Brooks or Ideale saddle. No dents, dings or rust. There may be some chips here and there are evidence of careful riding. If you’ve ever seen a Waltworks from 2015ish, you know that his powder coater back then didn’t pay much attention to detail. What does that mean? You’ll find some ”Easter eggs” here and there. There’s a fingerprint in the the PC of one of the rims. I’ll be diddly-danged if I can find it again, though.
